The porcini mushrooms (family Boletaceae) are some of the most charismatic and enigmatic groups of fleshy fungi. They are found worldwide where they are prominent components of nearly all ectomycorrhizal-dominated ecosystems. They are extraordinarily diverse and diversified rapidly, paralleling birds. Here I will present new data from my lab, including over 250 new genomes of diverse Boletaceae and over 100 genomes of Boletus edulis from across its range, providing new insight into the phylogeny, taxonomy, biogeography, and evolution of porcini mushrooms worldwide.
