Four world authorities on wild mushrooms, from around the world, walk into a bar...

What happens next, is up to the audience.

Mycology has recently become one of the hottest and most exciting fields of study. What do YOU know about fungi? How are fungi studied? Much of what we thought we knew about fungi 50, 100, 200 years ago etc. was wrong. New and better tools for discovery have led to many amazing recent discoveries in mycology. Fungi are now the subject for research in food, industry, biomaterials, medicine manufacturing labs; fungi have long been studied because many, if not most, of our most economically important pests of agriculture are fungi. Our uses and even our perceptions of fungi have changed down through history. And to this day, other cultures around the globe have very different perceptions, uses, and beliefs about fungi. Many peoples prize wild mushrooms as food; other groups of people avoid fungi altogether. Some folklore about fungi has been borne out by science, while some beliefs can get you killed (e.g. using a silver spoon to test a mushroom's toxicity or the belief that indigenous people are "adapted" to the toxins of deadly mushrooms). This presentation will be more of a discussion with audience participation encouraged; mushroom and fungi basics will be discussed; interesting lore and ... who knows where the conversation will go!
