Workshop: Mushroom ID and Vouchering, In The Modern Era

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Scientists rely on enthusiastic and educated citizens to make the lion's share of collections that are analyzed for study. Regularly, "citizen scientists" discover rare or unknown and undescribed species. What would you do if you found a "new" species...and how would you know? How would you get that specimen into the hands of an expert studying that group of organisms? Come get hands-on experience and learn how mushroom specimens are collected, identified, photographed, and vouchered for future scientific study. Observations made by citizen scientists and posted on sites like Mushroom Observer and iNaturalist are proving invaluable to science in the modern era. This is a great way to learn how citizen science is done from well-known experts in the field: Andy Wilson (Curator of the Fungarium, Denver Botanic Garden), Nathan Wilson (Creator of Mushroom Observer), and Michael Wood (Creator of MykoWeb and co-author of the Mushrooms of California). Oh, and feel free to bring your own mushroom specimens for anaysis.
